WWE All Women Smackdown? CM Punk CONFIRMS AEW Wresting Return Offer! WrestleTalk News July 2019

September 5, 2019

Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk Mecha
News, I am Luke Owen. I’m not doing the full Mecha thing today, it’s too hot. Have
yourself a SuperClick Party! Give us a subscribe, press the thumbs up, and leave a comment down
below to answer our question of the day: Do you want to see CM Punk join All Elite
Wrestling? Because we’ll be talking about the man himself who confirmed contract offers
from the company in this news episode, as well as WWE’s Saudia Arabia headaches, and
how it could lead to an all-women’s episode of Smackdown. You can jump to any of the news
stories by clicking the timestamps in the video description down below, but first. While he’s not the most liked man in the
wrestling world – thanks in part to Bruce Prichard and Eric Bischoff’s podcasts calling
him a liar – even though that’s all a work, brother – Dave Meltzer is easily the most
respected journalist in the industry today. He’s been reporting on wrestling for nearly
half a century, and has pretty much seen every single wrestling match that has ever taken
place. Which is why his legendary five star rating system is so revered. But that Five
Star Rating System, the FSRS if you will, has been a bit broken lately – with Kazuchika
Okada and Kenny Omega’s series of matches in New Japan earning 6 stars, 6 and a quarter
stars and even 7 stars for their Dominion main event last year. But that was a once-in-a-lifetime
feud, surely not everyone can break the five star barrier. Not even Shane McMahon the best
in the world. But that’s not the case! As this year already
we’ve seen four matches break the FSRS – with Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kenny Omega’s Wrestle
Kingdom 13 main event earning 5 and ¾ stars, Will Ospreay vs. Shingo Takagi from Night
15 of the Best of the Super Juniors getting the same score, Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano
from NXT TakeOver: New York getting 5 and a quarter stars, which was bettered by their
TakeOver: XXV match which got 5 and a half stars. And this year’s G1 has broken it again!
Not only did Meltzer award Jon Moxley his first ever five star rating for his incredible
match against Tomohiro Ishii, he also gave the match between Okada and Ospreay 5 and
¾ stars! Stars for you, stars for you, stars for everyone! Dave Meltzer enjoying an Okada
match, I am shocked. Sadly for Jimmy Uso, the only stars he’s
currently seeing is a Sherif’s Badge. Awkward segue, not proud of it. On this past Monday’s Raw Reunion, John
Cena brought out his Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick in a segment with The Usos, where
he made light of Jimmy Uso’s real-life arrest back in February. Ha, drink driving and putting
people’s lives in danger is funny. And it would seem Cena could see into the
future as Doctor of Strange-anomics with the Time Stone, as TMZ are reporting that Jimmy
Uso – real name, Jonathan Fatu – has once again been arrested for driving under the
influence in Florida. TMZ Sports report that law officials told them that Fatu was driving
erratically and “swerving from left to right”, and “reeked of alcohol” when he was pulled
over. Fatu reportedly refused a DUI test by the officer, and was arrested and given a
speeding citation. WWE released a statement saying, “Jonathan
Fatu is responsible for his own personal actions “ Based on previous punishments, we can expect
The Usos to beat The Revival for the Raw Tag Team Championships on Monday. It does seem as though we were leading to
an Usos vs. Revival match at Summerslam, but someone else’s Summerslam plans might not
be so clear. Dolph Ziggler made his return to WWE earlier
this year, and has been around for a lot longer that most fans expected he would be. WHY ARE
YOU STILL HERE?! However he’s not had the best run – only picking up one win over Xavier
Woods on an episode of Smackdown, and being beaten every other time – including losing
to Kevin Owens at Extreme Rules in a matter of seconds. Somehow, Dolph is still heading for a marquee
match at Summerslam – even with a tease this week that he could face Shawn Michaels of
all people. Dolph started a feud with The Miz the week prior, but it was reported that
the two will not clash at Summerslam, and Dave Meltzer has added in the latest Observer
Newsletter that Dolph isn’t set to face Michaels either. So who is Dolph going to
be going up against? Well according to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling
Observer Live, one name that has been mentioned is Goldberg. This would tie into Dolph’s
Smackdown promo where he called the match between DX and The Brothers of Destruction
at Crown Jewel an embarrassment, which isn’t incorrect. because the same can also be said
of Taker vs. Goldberg at Super Showdown earlier this year. It’s also been reported that
Trish Stratus could be coming out of retirement at Summerslam to take on Charlotte Flair,
so could we see another legend return to take on Dolph Ziggler? Ziggy returned to WWE for Super Showdown in
Saudi Arabia to replace Kevin Owens, who had refused to go in support of Sami Zayn – who
is banned from being a part of the shows due to his Syrian heritage. Yesterday, WWE held their quarterly investors
conference call, which contained the usual business, business, business we’ve come
to expect from them. Look at the graphs. So many graphs. So much data.
The unsurprising things to come from the call where that television ratings are down, merchandise
sales were down, and Network subscribers were also down. But the positives are that WWE
is still very profitable – thanks mostly to the Fox deal for Smackdown, and the Saudi
Arabia shows, which earn the company incredible amounts of money. However the second Saudi show of 2019 is proving
to be a tricky hurdle for WWE. The original date for the show was set to be the 1st of
November, but the Saudi government asked for it to be moved to an earlier date in October.
This was difficult for WWE as they had already booked their European tour which included
Raw and Smackdown tapings. So WWE changed several dates around – including doing a double
taping of Raw and Smackdown on a Friday night, cancelling all of their Italy shows, and cancelling
other dates on tour European tour. And in the ultimate troll move, the Saudi government
has asked for the show to be moved back to its original 1st of November date. As Dave
Meltzer writes in the Observer Newsletter, “One thing we can say is that this relationship
has been filled with headaches and bad publicity for the company” It also presents a different problem, with
November 1st being a Friday which will be the new home for Smackdown when it moves to
Fox in October. This means there will be a live PPV in Saudi Arabia in the afternoon,
then a few hours later a live episode of Smackdown back in the States – and obviously all of
the talent can’t be on both shows. Unless WWE tapes the episode of Smackdown
ahead of time, Meltzer riffs that one way round this would be for WWE to promote an
all-women episode of Smackdown Live seen as though they won’t be allowed to go to the
Saudi show due to the country’s antiquated laws. This would also take the place of the
second Evolution show which, despite being a critical and commercial success, was not
getting a follow-up this year. But WWE moving to Fox isn’t the only big
wrestling telly event happening this October. On Wednesday this week, All Elite Wrestling
confirmed that their weekly TV show will debut on TNT on October 2nd at 8pm Eastern – with
the first episode airing from Washington DC, which we’re reliably told is not the same
Washington that Daniel Bryan is from. But one question being asked of the company
currently is touring dates. We know from the press release and previous interviews that
AEW’s weekly show will be touring the country, but what about house shows? Since the company’s
inception, AEW officials have said that it would have its wrestlers bodies in mind with
less time on the road, and now Dave Meltzer might have shed some light on this. Meltzer reports that AEW’s goal is to run
between 100 and 120 shows per year, four of which would be PPVs and 51 would be the TV
tapings. The idea being to run house shows on almost every Saturday throughout the year,
and occasionally one other show during the week. The key to this is that the roster will
be split across these shows, with top talent working around 75 matches a year in order
to keep them fresh and healthy. By contrast, it was reported this week that
Baron Corbin has become the first wrestler in WWE to have 100 matches in 2019 – with
The Revival just behind him, Kofi Kingston with 95 matches and Ricochet with 90. So that’s
100 matches for Baron Corbin of all people in the first seven months of the year, with
five more still to go. And maybe that lighter schedule could be what
entices a certain someone to the company, CM Punk to AEW confirmed. CM Punk is one of the most mythical names
in wrestling – with fans around the world still holding out for that fabled CM Punk
wrestling return that has been teased and talked about since he left WWE in 2014. It’s
been talked about so much that it’s a meme here at WresteTalk. Our CM Punk to AEW confirmed
is a parody of ourselves and other wrestling fans and websites who hang on his every word
and tweet The Best in the World puts out. And with CM Punk being announced for Starrcast
III last week, the train was pulling into speculation station that he’ll be part of
AEW’s All Out. But in an interesting interview with ESPN, Punk revealed that it’s not just
speculation on our part – and that he has had offers from AEW about joining the promotion. Punk told ESPN, “I got a text from Cody
[Rhodes]. And again, I almost don’t even know how to reply to them sometimes, because
if I reply, they do interviews and are like, “Oh yeah, I just talked to Punk.” I’m
kind of damned if I do, damned if I don’t. I always think if somebody wants to do business
with me, they can come talk to me. Texting offers isn’t really a way to do good business,
at least… It was texted through three people and an offer came in through text. This is
like a month ago, maybe… it was just a general offer. I never could have done [Double or
Nothing], because I was in California for CFFC.” CM Punk to AEW confirmed, etc. This is in line with that what Punk said around
this time last year, confirming that he had an offer from Cody and The Young Bucks to
be part of All In last September, but said that an offer via text wasn’t a real offer.
But it is interesting to note that AEW are pursuing a working relationship with Punk,
which would be a huge boost to their brand as they gear up for their October launch on
TNT. Seemingly make light of this situation, one
half of the AEW World Championship match at All Out, Hangman Page tweeted: “hey @NickJacksonYB
your idea for my BTE bit was good but if somebody wants to do business with me, they can come
talk to me. texting offers isn’t really a good way to do business, at least.” And speaking of texts, this almanac has got
a lot of text in it. And beautiful pictures! Here’s Oli
Davis with more!

He should return as a pro WWE heel, cutting promos about how AEW is a half rate ripoff and how Vince is a genius that can't be beat, give him a suit and have him strut like him to the ring, have Jericho and Moxley in the same faction as well, Moxley mocking the Rock and Jericho mocking HHH for added effect, they could name their stable the World Wrestling Federation.

  • Reply RicoLen1 July 27, 2019 at 2:08 pm

AEW really ought to treat Punk like he's Dave Batista and they're Triple H. Just give him what he wants. Go see him in person, sit down with him, make him an offer he can't refuse for a 1 year contract so that when they debut their show, they can advertise CM Punk as being on the roster, and then if everything goes to hell, so what? The ratings Punk will pull in, love him or hate him will be insane, and if everything DOES work out well then AEW have a guy that could potentially draw better than ANYONE WWE currently have on their roster.

dont care. Phil brooks has been out of the business for years, failed at being a UFC fighter (definitely and decisively) and well minus the "old clout" he brings from WWE, dont really give a rats ass. unless they want to push him, on the mic and behind the scenes eh he is a mediocre wrestler at best with nothing more but his gimmick from the two prior federations at other words BORING!! it would not benefit AEW in the right way, it would be like bringing Hogan or Nash back into the squared circle, would get a pop but would ultimately die off when he can hang anymore with the young crowd

  • Reply PWFan4Days July 27, 2019 at 10:12 pm

What could cause Rikishi's arse not to be MEDICALLY cleared for the stinkface move at the Raw Reunion last week? blisters? oozing sores? IDK. I got it, let Jey be in a D-wayne Johnson movie, just come up with a believable illness which is a precedent by every other wrestler and bring him back as a baby-face 🙂

The only people who know him are hardcore wrestling fans and UFC fans that know him as a failure in the UFC…. he is not a draw. I have said it before and will say it again. Wrestling PPV's, house shows audiences have been declining for all promotions for the last 20 years. Wrestling is DEAD!!!. This is not a WWE problem this is an INDUSTRY PROBLEM!!!!! Stop blaming Saudi Arabia…Women wrestling has never been better or more marketable but yet wrestling audiences are lower than its ever been, PPV buys are down across the board, and online subscriptions are down across the board. Women wrestling/Revolution means nothing IT IS NOT A DRAW!!!!!!! THE FUTURE OF PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING IS DEAD!!!! – "It's over, get what you can out of the business" – Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

He left his fans and has been disrespecting them whenever possible. Why the pro wrestling fans can't get over him is beyond me.

I havent watched Wrestletalk for a while. When he said "Dave Meltzer is easily the most respected reporter today", I realised why. Is that a Chris Van Vlurgh interview on the right of my screen. See you in a year Wrestletalk, maybe two, if youre still here.

Sick of Punk and his complaining, why even be in talks with them if he has zero plans to go back to wrestling

when it comes to punk , people fail to remember that he is old and haven't practiced wersteling in years

CM Punk calling himself “Best in the World” is like Shane McMahon calling himself “Best in the World” only difference is if they were the only 2 wrestlers in the world (Punk & Shane), Shane would be the best in the world ?

I'm from IL and wish I could be there when/if Punk returns. To hear that pop live…there wouldn't be words.
BUT if MJF decided to get the ultimate heat and troll the crowd w/ Cult of Personality, I wouldn't be mad at him ??

AEW doesn't need to convince Punk to wrestle the worst thing about their product is announcers. They need him on the mic doing color comentary

I'm so tired on CM Punk. He took his ball and went home. I understand he was unhappy and respect him for standing up for himself and leaving, but I'm just tired of him.

If Punk genuinely admired & belived in AEW, don't you think he would've joined them for All In which just so happened to be in his very own hometown???????

Punk clearly doesn't truly care about Pro Wrestling anymore based on all the shit he's said since walking away so if he were to come back & join AEW, it's not because he's rediscovered his passion for the business or because he wants to help grow AEW but just to satisfy his need to piss off WWE!!!

I really really wish that AEW could just realize that they really don't need Punk to be successful, who cares about Punk when you already have the likes of Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks, former WWE Superstars like Dean Ambrose & Y2J and most especially Kenny Omega himself!!!

With his enormous ego, I wouldn't be surprised if Punk treated AEW the same dam way that Vince Russo treated WCW or Hogan treated TNA!!!
