Thought you had done enough to score late
in the game? You don’t think you have done enough, but
you certainly hope so. At that point in the game you go 2-1 up, you have got to do the
basics right. Get all the details right. We got one wrong, with the first one. And the second one was soft, soft for a right-back
to cut inside and score into the bottom corner. You have to be real about it and honest about
it that they had two shots, the breakaway in the first one and the second one late in
the game, and they scored two goals. Must feel like a broken record with not being
clinical? Yeah. We know the story here at home. Teams
with 11 have defended here like that and we’ve had problems, then with ten against Arsenal
it is understandable, I think they defended their box well. I would say that it is the
story of creating a lot, not unbelievable chances, but that can be the way. But at this
level when balls are coming across the box, and crosses, whether it be headers, shots
inside the box, we need to take them more because one goal always keeps a team in the
game. How frustrating is it because you could be
miles ahead now in fourth? We look at that a lot and we shouldn’t really
dwell on results gone but a lot of them have looked the same so it puts you in one direction.
I don’t like too many stats on expected goals because it is not all that clear at
times, but we are bottom of the league at home, and we’re creating second to probably
Liverpool. That is two ends of the scale of where we’re at. Harder to control the game against ten men,
why was that? For 15 minutes of the first half it did because
we were in the mindset of them with 11 and Ozil pulling out to the side and them giving
you problems. We ended up being in a middle ground, so I was pleased for half-time to
come so we could address that. I thought in the second half it was what it was. We had
a lot of the ball, we were in their half a lot of the time. They had a few breakaways,
that can happen. Being tentative when they had ten was wrong, you have to go in and still
be really positive to make sure they don’t get out. They had a few moments and they fought
for it. That is what they should do in a London derby. The initiative should be on us to be
really ruthless about doing the right things, moving the ball quick enough, take chances
when they come along. I think we moved it quick enough at times but didn’t take our
chances when they came. How is Tammy Abraham? I don’t know. He had a bang on his ankle,
he has had ice on it. I haven’t spoken to him yet, so I can’t really update you on
that. What can you do to improve game management
with late goals conceded? Unfortunately you can talk about them and
work on them. On some of these things it’s not working. We set up to defend the edge
of the box when we have a corner. If it is different on pitch then that’s not good
enough. It’s not working, it’s something they have to do on the pitch. If they can’t
do it then someone else will have to do it right. Angry Arsenal played on after Tammy went down but Chelsea played on and you should do better game management? Yes, the ball should go out. I think Tammy
stood up for a while but the ball should go out when he is down. I am not angry at them
for carrying on. That’s normal. They went down a few times when the player was in the
box and it was in a critical area where we play. With Tammy, it was out of play a bit
so when we won it back we should have knocked it out. Kante slip? It was on the edge of the box that was the
problem. People have got to do their jobs. We have people on the edge of the box that
ran forward when they should have run backwards. It left N’Golo, it went to N’Golo and he slips.
That wasn’t the error. That’s something that can happen. The edge of the box was the error,
as I say, a job that should have been done but not done. Defenders in the transfer market? No, not at the moment. I know and I feel where
we need strengthening, not just in January, it is a difficult window for us. It is probably
more of a short-term window for us. What this season has given us and continues to give
us is answers on the pitch and in areas where I think we can get better and that’s for me
to get right, I suppose for us, but not so much in this window. Pulisic fitness update? Yes, he
was playing well and in terms of when he is back it is probably not going to be a week.
It will probably be the other end of the February break but he is getting better and he is not
that far away. A game like today could have been a game where he would be helpful for
us because he was playing well for a patch but other people do need to stand up in those
situations. Kepa too casual? I know there’s a focus on him at the minute.
That’s top line football. Yes, with his feet, a couple of times today he took too long and
he nearly gave it away. That can sometimes change the momentum of a game that he will
know, has to look at and we will have to look at. Yes, it is normal. Any player in a position
particularly like goalkeepers will look at you. Particularly, the mettle you have got.
He is not the only one. We are in fourth position which is seen as pretty good. I know and we
all know that there should be another 10 points on the board at least on performance. We need
to look at those finer details. Can Chelsea cope without Tammy if injured? Yes, yes. We have the players there to do
that. I hope not, but if he is then yes. Trust in Michy Batshuayi? Yeah.

How are you feeling? We’re very optimistic. We know them well,
we played them a month ago. We’re playing well, we’re not getting the results we should
& that we deserve. We’re not scoring the goals we could. We believe that better days are coming. We’re
positive. Three days where after the first day of recovering we still managed to two
days to work tactically and improve step by step. It’s today two months since my arrival
and we’re positive. Good atmosphere, players very positive, players
happy with some little evolutions that we had in the last couple of weeks. We like to
play at home, let’s go for it. We know Norwich come from a victory and closed
the gap to their targets. But we believe in ourselves and we are ready. Tomorrow is going
to be our day. Is Danny Rose fit? Yeah. How is your relationship with him? My relationship with my players is good and
I love to work with my group. And that’s it. Have you had a disagreement with him? No. Between me and Danny? No. Any tension in the air? I don’t know what you mean by tension in the
air, I don’t have any problem with him. He was not selected against Watford and Middlesbrough.
The reason he was not selected against Middlesbrough is we have a young left-back we want to develop
and it was a great opportunity to play Sessegnon. And also because his performance against Liverpool
was not phenomenal. On the Thursday before Watford, late evening,
I got a call from my medical staff saying that Danny was calling them with a problem
in his back and he wouldn’t train the next day. So Friday, the day before the game, it was
a bit of surprise that he was ready to train. It was not a big problem but even so I decided
then to play with Tanganga and have Ryan on the bench. That’s the situation. Did he have any issue with that? Not with me. I receive a written report every
day from my medical department, and it this case, because it was too late – 9-10pm – it
was not a written report but a telephone call. My medical department know that it’s very
important for me to know for my next training session if my players are available. They
called me to say that if I needed a left-back for my training session, it was better to
call the academy and bring Dennis Cirkin because Danny Rose was not available to train. The transfer window is still open, has there
been any update on Christian Eriksen? I can tell you it is great news for you because
everyday is a wonderful day. I have to say amazing work, people gets addicted to the
screen because it’s amazing. But for us we are very poor on news. We are very poor for two reasons: one because
we are not buying a player every day and second because I am the kind of guy who refuses to
speak about players from other clubs, which some managers they are happy to do it. I don’t
do it, so any name you can throw at me, I will say that player belongs to club A, B
or C. And I don’t talk about players from club A, B or C. And in relation to Christian, the answer is
not good for you. But that is the answer, and the answer is he is selected for tomorrow. So still no deal? He is selected for tomorrow, he will play
tomorrow. How about Cavani whose contract ends this
summer? Paris Saint-Germain player! But he’s a natural fit? I think I have a very good relationship with
Mr Nasser and Mr Leonardo. I want to keep that great relation, and good relations are
based on respect, and I’m not going to talk about a player from Paris Saint-Germain. Unless
you want to joke and they are my friends, they could send Mbappe on loan. More than
that I have nothing to say. You must be happy with the clean sheet, only
the second since you joined? Clean sheets show something positive about
the team. It’s not just my second clean sheet, I think it’s the first clean sheet of Tottenham
away from home for more than a year. So I think important, the players were happy with
that. I felt them as happy as when we had our first away victory for also almost a year
when we beat West Ham. So it was a good feeling, and Watford is difficult.
So it is to get a clean sheet in a game when you win three or four-nil, it is to get a
clean sheet in a game where your opponent is a difficult one. So good feelings, but
our feelings are also that Liverpool we had chances to score goals. Against Middlesbrough
we had chances to score much more than that. Against Watford we had chances to score, we
want to develop our team offensive also – learning how to play with players who have characteristics
that are completely different characteristics of the players that we lost is also a process.
But we are positive. The boys want to play tomorrow, really want to play tomorrow. We
are positive. You’ve got the FA Cup tie in a couple of days,
can you prioritise one competition over another? It’s game after game. Next game is Premier
League. That’s the priority. We need points. After that it’s Southampton and then for two
days, the priority will be the FA Cup. That’s the way you have to look at it. Japhet Tanganga has done well for you, could
Troy Parrott join the group and make a similar impact to solve your striker crisis? I’m ready to answer you because I had a long
conversation with him today, so I’m ready to share with you a little bit. I think he
has potential. I think he needs to work a lot. He has a process to go through, a process
that probably Tanganga had. One thing is 17 and another thing is 20. We are speaking about
three years of distance and three years. Ok in Tanganga’s case it was three years without
a Premier League match, but it was three years or working and playing, playing in his age
groups, playing in England national team which also gave him some experience.
Then with me it was just the last part of his preparation before he had his first opportunity. I think Troy has to go through a process.
Can he have minutes? Yes he can minutes. I’m not saying he’s not able to have minutes,
but to put on his shoulders the responsibility of replacing somebody to be replaced, I don’t
think he’s ready at all. How ready is Tanguy Ndombele for this game? He’s ready, he’s not ready for 90 minutes.
He will be involved. He will be selected. I’m not telling you to start or come later,
but no injury. Completely free. Just a question of condition and mentality to be ready, but
he’s back tomorrow. Do you notice more fight and urgency from
teams in Norwich’s position? It’s difficult to say that. You look to the
Premier League table and apart from the champions, that is done, apart from City and Leicester,
that they’re also very comfortable in their positions, you look to the rest of the table
and two victories and two defeats will make a huge difference. The people in the relegation
zone, they win two matches and they come out of it. The people fighting for top four or six, you
lose two matches and you drop back and you win two matches and you go up. So I think
every game has a meaning. Every game has a meaning. I cannot say that but I know Norwich
are in their fight and they come from a positive victory and they will try to get their points. Eric Dier looked like he was going to be an
important player for you but he hasn’t started in the Premier League for more than a month,
is that down to fitness or form? It is just an old question and the old answer
of only 11 can play. I remember I had a couple of questions about Winks when he was not playing.
Now Winks is playing and now your question is about Eric. I would like to have in every
position the group problem that I have there. In there if I want to play with a more positional
player, I have Eric and Winks and that is great to have one to play and one to rotate
to be on the bench, but then it is the old story of people focusing on the one that is
not playing. But good squads, competitive squads have these problems all over the place,
this amazing problem. So happy, Eric and Winks happy. Are you confident Tanguy Ndombele can now
put a run of games together? Let’s see. I am confident but let’s see. We
know what he can give to the team. If I focus on the few minutes or matches that he played
for us I saw qualities that are very important for a team to play like we do. But if course,
it is not nice to play a game and after 15 minutes be out, it is not nice to play one
game and then stops for two, three or four. This last week he worked individual work with
fitness coach to bring his level up and then he was integrated with the team without any
kind of problem and hopefully tomorrow it is a good start for him. We have three more matches before the break,
the break will also be a n opportunity to improve the players who are not in the best
conditions but hopefully he can give us something tomorrow, Saturday and the match against City. What do you make of Son’s recent performances? I think he is playing fine, he is not finding
the goal. In every match we can go to situations where he could score. We go for example to
Watford and in the first half he had that run with a long pass that instead of controlling
he hit it with the first touch and it went over the bar. We had one in the second half
when on the middle right he hit a very strong shot over the bar too. The situations are there, attacking players
need confidence, confidence comes with goals not with words or hugs – they come with
goals. Fantastic player, fantastic boy, great professional, he is the kind of player that
even if he doesn’t score goals he is good for the team. They are some kind of strikers that if they
score they are brilliant, if they don’t they don’t give anything for the team. He gives
us so much even if he doesn’t score that I am not so worried about it, the goals will
arrive and I believe it will be tomorrow.
Mikel you must be really proud of your players? I am. The spirit they showed, the character,
the fight and the leadership as well was there because you have to really stand up. I asked
them that when someone makes a mistake – it can happen in football, someone has to take
a red card – what cannot happen is that after we don’t stand up for him and every single
did it with belief as well. I could sense at half time they believed they could get
back in the game and I wasn’t expecting Hector to score with his left foot obviously, but
I’m very pleased. Leadership has been questioned in past years
and Arsenal seem to be showing that in recent times… Absolutely. I’m surprised as well, we’re playing
with a lot of young kids and what they showed tonight is going to be a great experience
for them to keep believing that in football, if you put everything, anything can happen.
So in that sense, top. When Holding was about coming on was Martinelli
going to come off? Not Martinelli but I changed my mind. I was
thinking about that and said ‘I don’t want to send that message’ to the team and we decided
to keep us as we were, give them a chance and I wanted to see how they could respond
to that. Don’t make the response for them because I asked them to be accountable for
what they do and I didn’t want to make a decision not to let them decide for themselves. It
was a great response from them. Martinelli looks a natural finisher. Not many
kids at that age can score goals like that… No and to play in this stadium the way he
has, with 10 men and against Azpilicueta who in my opinion is one of the best defenders
in the league – and he was going against him every single time, you need courage to do
that. Then his energy. I wanted to take him off a few times because he looked knackered,
he was cramping and next minute he’s sprinting 60 yards again. Martinelli’s really stepped up in Aubameyang’s
absence hasn’t he? Absolutely. Not just him, I think Laca is
playing at a really good level even though he’s not scoring and Nico as well and everybody
that’s coming in. They are fighting really hard in training to try to convince us to
play more – when they question some things I tell them (to) speak on the pitch and this
is to speak on the pitch. How is David Luiz? It was a very special game obviously and to
get sent off the way he did, he was disappointed but at the same time proud of his teammates. Do you have any complaints about the sending
off? Possible double-jeopardy? I watched it from different angles and different
angles make it look a bit different. They made the decision, we have to accept it, that’s
it. How impressed have you been with Granit Xhaka’s
leadership? From day one, I spoke with him and obviously
his mind was a little bit varied because of a lot of things that happened in his life
and his family. I tried to convince him that this was the right place for him to stay,
that I wanted to give him the opportunity to try to enjoy playing football again and
everything I ask him to do in every training session he is willing to do it. Today I knew,
the moment I put him there I don’t know how good he was going to do but
he’s going to put everything out there and he was great. Is that the attitude you want to see from
every player? Absolutely and to transmit that to every member
of the staff and the players and he did it. Is how the side responded to adversity today
what you see in training? In terms of that yes, in terms of things related
to the game we are still a long way in many aspects that we have to improve but without
this – that will hold the foundation for everything to build what we want to build together. Without
this you cannot compete to (an) elite level and to do that we have to be ruthless and
it has to be everyday because you know you don’t have the mechanism to respond like they
did today. Lacazette didn’t score but had an amazing
contribution… Amazing and he sacrificed a lot for the team
and sometimes he may lack a bit of energy at the end because he’s doing extra work but
I am so happy with him. What could this result do? I don’t know. I hope they take it in a good
way and they say from here we move to a different level and not say ‘we done this at Chelsea
now go somewhere else and it can be easy’ so I will not let them think like this. What’s going on with Martinelli. Does he go
to Brazil? We don’t know anything yet.
Rob McClendon: Hello, everyone. Thanks for
joining us here on “Horizon.” Well, located about a half an hour north of Oklahoma City,
Langston, Okla., is home to the state’s only historically black college. And it’s here
on this small campus, in the middle of the Oklahoma prairie, that a pioneering woman
in her own right is beginning her journey back to coaching relevance. Our Courtney Maye
has the story of Cheryl Miller and how she’s using the lessons from her own life to change
the lives of others. Courtney Maye: It’s a long way from the lights
of Los Angeles to the lonely prairie of Langston, Okla., a journey basketball legend Cheryl
Miller says she’s glad she made. Cheryl Miller: The two years of trying to
get back into women’s basketball was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Courtney: A four-time All-American and a two-time national champion, Miller lead Team USA to
an Olympic gold. Miller: Winning an Olympic medal in Los Angeles
and having your family watch – that’s probably my greatest achievement.
Courtney: She became a Hall of Famer transitioning into sports broadcasting. Yet despite her
list of accomplishments, when she tried to return to coaching, her dreams were shot down.
Miller: It was the most humbling, gut wrenching, confusing, depressing time of my life. And
to hear irrelevant, no, to knock on doors that aren’t answered, phone calls that aren’t
returned. In our life we need to be knocked down a peg. We need to experience what a lot
of people feel as their daily life. I’ll speak for myself, I got to a point where I felt
that I was untouchable, that there was something Teflon about me. And this experience, like
I said was very humbling. It forced me out of my comfort zone.
Courtney: So she reached out to an old friend, her former athletic director at USC.
Miller: From a male role model, my dad’s the end all be all, and right there is Mike Garrett
– just a man of character, substance, knowledge of just life. And he was my sounding board
for two years where I’m like, “Mike, I can’t get hired.” I said, “I can’t even get a sniff.”
And he’s like, “Just be patient.” Courtney: And she was – until she picked up
the phone, and it was Garrett on the line. Miller: So I was at Magic Mountain hanging
out with friends and he said, “Are you ready to coach?” And I said, “Yeah, I’ve been telling
you that for the last two years,” and I said, “Where?” He said, “Here at Langston.” I said,
“Great.” I said, “OK, Langston. I know where OKC is, the Thunder. I know where Tulsa is,
WNBA the Shock.” He said, “I looked, and Langston’s smack dab in the middle, NAIA.” I had no idea
what NAIA is. I’d heard about it, but it was the fact that he was giving me the opportunity,
and I jumped at it. Mike Garrett: I knew if she got here, and
she started coaching, the way she is, that the young ladies would only grow and get better
as basketball players and certainly as young women.
Courtney: Prior to Miller coming to Langston, the Lady Lions lost 10 games in 2013, but
this year qualified for the national tournament, a turnaround Garrett says is reflective of
Miller’s coaching style. Garrett: The girls are kind of in awe of her
when she first got here. But when they start playing and she starts giving them kind of
corrective directions, then they realize how much she really knows of the game. And then
they also know how much she wants them to improve. She’s a consummate coach, and she
knows how to touch people and make them grow. Courtney: Lessons that Miller learned in her
own driveway with her little brother, NBA great Reggie Miller.
Miller: We’re always competitive. The advantage that Reggie always had was his mouth. I mean,
I couldn’t outtalk him. I mean, the guy just drove me nuts. So the best way to shut him
up obviously was to beat him. But you know to this day, there’s nothing friendly about
even playing, you know, a pickup game of horse. You know, it’s always competitive. You know,
at a 100 years old, we’re still trying to beat one another.
Courtney: I know sometimes you and Reggie would have games on the same night, your dad
would go with you and your mom would go with him.
Miller: I always felt that Reggie got the better end of the deal because he had my mom.
My mom was a tremendous cheerleader, and she wasn’t critical. But my dad on the other hand,
decent cheerleader, very critical. So he was always the one taking me to my games and watching
it. There’s something about having, whether it’s one parent or two parents supporting
you. That’s probably what I miss the most now that my mom’s not here, is the second
or the biggest transition of my life, you know, coming back to women’s basketball, coming
back to coaching. And, uh, wow, I didn’t think I was gonna get emotional about this – her
not being here. But I know she’s here, she’s always with me. But, yeah, that’s the missing
part right now in my life is my mom not being here.
Courtney: Values instilled in Miller that reflect now her character-building coaching
style. Miller: Every day you roll out of bed, make
a better you, be a better you. And try to impact somebody. And you’re gonna make mistakes.
We all make mistakes, but you gotta learn from ’em and more importantly you gotta admit
it. Be woman enough to say, “You know what, I messed up. I made a mistake. I shouldn’t
have said this, or I shouldn’t have done this.” And that’s gonna be lasting. That’s life lessons,
and once the basketball and life are like this, the sky’s the limit.
Courtney: A philosophy Miller says is changing lives, including her own.
Rob: Well, Coach Miller seems like she has quite the personality.
Courtney: She’s definitely animated, but don’t let that fool you because she’s about the
business when it comes to basketball. Rob: But she really acts like she likes her
players. Courtney: She does, and she even spoke about
one of her players, senior Lynette Holmes, and said that she could be one of the best
players that she’s ever coached. And she’s coached at USC with Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson
and even in the WNBA with Bridgette Pettis, so for her to say that Lynette Holmes could
be one of the best players that she’s ever coached was really impressive to me.
Rob: So how did the Lady Lions season, how did it finish up?
Courtney: Well, they started out undefeated, and then they won their conference tournament
and made it to the NAIA Division I National Tournament. And they made it to the Sweet
16 in that, and then they finished up with a record of 28 and 4. And I just really think
that their success this season reflects her coaching style.
Rob: Which her coaching style kind of extends to even when you do an interview with her,
right? Courtney: Right. She even coached me a little
bit. She helped me out with my jumper, so that was helpful.
Rob: All right. Thank you so much Courtney. Courtney: You’re welcome.
Rob: Now, if you’d like to see Cheryl Miller’s basketball tips to the best 5-foot-6 shooting
guard on our set today, just head over to okhorizon.com and see our Courtney Maye get
