Norwich 2-2 Arsenal – Freddie Ljungberg FULL Post Match Press Conference – SUBTITLES

December 2, 2019

Hello Freddie, what did it feel like to be in charge for the first time and how did you feel about the game? Of course I was proud and honoured to be allowed to stand there on the touchline and lead this great club. If we look at the game, truly we started well. We dominated totally, found pockets of space and created chances. I would have expected us to take the lead. Everyone can see we have problems on the transition when we lose possession. That is something that is easy for a coach to see what we have to work on and not get countered in those ways. After that, I’m extremely proud of the players that they came back twice, especially as they scored just before half time. You get that and morale goes down but they came out fighting and got it done. The end of the game was too open for my liking. I saw my players getting tired, we’ve played a lot but in the end it was a draw. Of course I was hoping Lucas (Torreira) would score in the last second but that’s how it is. Did you see enough today to encourage you? 100%. What I saw in the first 30 minutes and the belief and how we played that was good. Offensively that was good. I don’t know if you saw it but when we went 1-0 down, the players weren’t shaking their heads, they were actually going ‘come on guys we can sort this out’. That shows they believe they are quality players. We need to change a negative trend plus, with our run that was a difficult game and the players did really well. How many sessions do you need to get them playing the way you want them to? Normally a pre-season is five-six weeks and you can implement how you want to play football but I don’t have that. I just try to do small building blocks and try to change things in a slow tempo so people can understand and practice. Now players need to recover and we’ll probably get one and a half sessions but that’s football. I just try to make things simple as possible and hopefully we get better. Does everybody start with a clean slate? I haven’t had that word with them but that’s how it works for me. I’ve been here for three months and last year I was with the Under-23s so I saw every first team game so I have an opinion of how we can play but I try to see it as everyone has a fair chance. I am going to judge them on training and their games. The team are still conceding so many shots, is it a major problem? I think when we dominated and had possession it wasn’t a problem. We have a problem on transition and I want to try to fix that. We want to be a club that has possession and hopefully when we have the ball the opponents don’t so they can’t shoot as much. Can you show what you can do and put your case forward? I hope the club knows what I can and can’t do. I’m looking forward day by day and I’m honoured that they trusted me to do this. I’m trying to help the players as much as I can and that’s how I see it. Is top four still achievable? 100%. People drop points here and there, we drop points, so it’s a bit of a crazy league at the moment but of course I think Arsenal can go back to the top four. Are you any closer to bringing in staff? That’s something we are working on and when I know, I will let everybody know. What was the thinking behind not bringing on Nicolas Pepe? Pepe’s a very good player but I try to go off what I see in training and what’s being done everyday and that’s how I judge. Thank you

I actually like what he says. He can see the problem. He cant fix it overnight. People moan about Mustafi but didnt Sokratis mess up a few times? Luiz? Holding? Lol! It was always going to be a problem. Bellerin and Tierney arent match fit. And Auba is more effective from the right than left. So it was either Pepe or Ozil. I would imagine he's had a heart to heart with Pepe and said he needs to improve but he also needs to find the right system to fit Pepe in. If Ozil didnt play, people would moan, Pepe didnt play, people moan. Auba, Laca, Pepe and Ozil can happened but not with the state of our midfield and defence. But we dont have enough quality in those departments. I think he will try to coach the players to a new network. We were abit harder to break down. Thats overnight. Give him time. The fact is we will need a clearout. We dont have enough players who take football seriously. They dont realise that these performances and results will forever be part of their playing history. Quite a few players need to up their game or move on.

I hope Pepe is listening. Work harder. Thanks Freddie

  • Reply John Wright December 1, 2019 at 11:34 pm

I really wish the press would stop asking Freddie about his long-term ambitions. He's a coach who has been asked to step in as a caretaker manager for an indeterminate amount of time with a club that he loves and a team that was on the verge of meltdown. He's going to do the best he can.

As for today, he's had only one day of training with the players available, so he had to go by what he's seen in the last week in games and training. Clearly, he didn't want to make any radical changes nor should he. With so many games coming in the holiday period, it will be a miracle if Freddie has all the players healthy and rested enough to actually field his preferred starting eleven. I'm very curious to know what that team would be. I think he's quite wise to start everyone with a clean slate, as what other option does he have if he wants to give Arsenal the best chance of finishing in the top four. I do have to admit to being a little disappointed with his starting eleven, but he is the one who has seen them all in training. COYG !!!

Arsenal blood in Freddie. When asked about Pepe? he said " i choose players based on what i see in training." So what he is saying is if you are not showing 100% commitment in training then you will be warming the bench or maybe sold- no sentiment from him. Freddie knows the badge is bigger than the player.

  • Reply Clayon Ireland December 2, 2019 at 4:13 am

Freddie can't do one shit player do well in training and look like garbage on match day pepe is far way better than saka and willock

Dropping pepe is only going to cause more damage, his confidence is low due to Emery poor team selection tactics, I guarantee you if someone believes in him and give him play time he will be a monster 👾

  • Reply Daniel Hounslow December 2, 2019 at 7:54 am

He seems like a fantastic manager! He will always have my support though it's freddie! He's always been a massive asset as a player and looks like a asset as a coach and manager! I hope he gets the job

  • Reply Don Ongoma December 2, 2019 at 8:09 am

I was lowkey mad at Ljungberg that he still picked an Emery team and made Emery-like substitutions…but listening to him,,he sounds like he knows what he's doing and has a definite style of play in mind..That would be an improvement when we can see it on the pitch after him handling more training sessions

  • Reply Ayel Ajak December 2, 2019 at 8:15 am
