How to Shield a Soccer Ball – Online Soccer Academy

What’s going on? Little dap. It’s Jared
Montz former pro and founder of Soccer Academy. Today we are learning soccer skill drills
how to shield the ball from a defender. Description:
Using your body to shield the ball is an important soccer skill. As a forward it’s especially
important so when the ball is played into you, you can hold the ball up a few seconds
and this time allows for your midfielders to move up the field and support you. Key Points: Soccer Training Exercises
1. Turn your body sideways between the ball and your defender. Standing sideways gives
you better balance. 2. Bend your knees and lean into your defender.
Do not stand upright, as you will more easily be knocked off the ball 3. Use your toe studs and inside and outside
of your foot farthest away from your defender to control the ball. 4. Use your arm to feel where your defender
is but don’t grab them with your hands as that is usually a foul. 5. Spin away from the defender when possible.
If you feel the defender come up your left side, spin to your right. Equipment Needed: You need a ball and a partner.
If you don’t have a partner then just imagine you are playing against a defender. Exercise Player Can Do: Drills for soccer
Start off in your correct shielding the ball position against your defender. Once ready
say go. Youth soccer drills. Your partner, the defender, applies 50% pressure and pretends
to try and win it while you shield the ball. Do this for the 30 seconds. Then rest and
repeat 5 times and then switch with your partner. Once you feel comfortable with your technique
have the defender apply full pressure and see how long you can shield the ball. Do this
5 times and switch with your partner. If you don’t have a partner to train with
then imagine you are playing against a defender soccer exercises. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If you are getting knocked off the ball easily then you are off balance and too upright.
Turn your body sideways for better balance, bend your knees and lean into the defender. Bonus Tip:
Be aggressive and mentally strong when shielding the ball. Don’t “Hope” that you keep
the ball away from the defender, believe 100% that you own the ball and the defender is

    I came exactly looking for this video. First time I watched it, didn't fully grasp but after playing street soccer for so many years without real training I needed to go back and learn the basics..these basic soccer skills are very useful. keep making them please. great video thanks.

    i tend to do this alot. at first i got penalties because my arms were too high. now i can protect properly. i can now defend my little 5ft2 figure aha! thank you!:)

    Hello jared ugh i want to say that every time i get the ball i always lose it even when i dribble is there a way i wont lose the ball quickly? Or i just need to practice dribbling? Or i just practice this? Im 14 and just started playinng soccer i mean i know a little bit becuase i played when i was 6 then i stop ;( i also want to tryout for my high school team? I there a way i improve dribbling?ball controll?

    Can a soccer player play in whatever league the want like is it possible and how like could i play in "La Liga" if i am born in the US or say i join the international league could i play for whatever team

    What if they push you off the ball. I am a 13 year old and im quite small for my age and every time I go up against a guy I shield as a last resort but every time i do they push me off the ball.

    He left out a MAJOR point! When shielding the ball, eyes & and head MUST be up and moving on a swivel at all times!  If you do it with your head down….as his head was down the entire time on the demo, the negative take away is 1. You'll get double teamed and lose the ball 2. You'll miss seeing teammates who are supporting you from behind and teammates making penetrating runs. (and tick off your teammates) 3. You'll miss seeing where there is the MOST room to spin away from the defender and maintain possession. Clever defenders will pull and tug, so "feeling" for the defender is an inadequate option. Click on clips of Iniesta, Xavi and Pirlo shielding the ball. They NEVER have their head down!  Copy and model their habits and become the best player you can be! Good luck

    You can't use your arm, that's a foul. in your clips, you use your arm against him to cover the ball. it's a foul that is sadly never called
