Frank Lampard FULL Pre-Match Press Conference – Chelsea v Arsenal – Premier League – SUBTITLES

January 21, 2020

Reece James, how is his injury? He’s got an injury to the back of his knee
area, not as bas as it could have been or we maybe thought. He’s in contention for tomorrow
but it will be a tight call so we’re gonna give him another 24 hours to see if it settles down,
it’s settled down pretty quickly so far. Were you fearing the worst? Yeah, a little bit, because he had injuries
at the start of the season. But now it seems it’s not as bad as it could have been. I won’t absolutely count my chickens but hopefully
he’ll be okay for tomorrow, if not the weekend. Marcos Alonso, is he fit? Yes he’s fit and in the squad. Does the finishing, or lack of, hasten the
need for a new attacking player? I don’t think it hastens it, it’s just we
couldn’t do any business in the summer window. At this point it’s something we’ve seen as
a bit of a problem in our home games. So we’ve got to work hard with the group here,
and then if we can improve in terms of goal scoring it’s for sure something we have to
look at. Is it a mental thing? I wouldn’t just isolate it as that, I think
it’s many things. Sometimes as a team you can work to get yourself
up the pitch, and then you rely on those moments of killer instinct, being calm or whatever
it maybe to put the ball away. But it’s something we’ve fallen short of,
and we’ll certainly have to get better if we want to continue to look upwards. There’s a slight ceiling if you can’t do that
last bit. It’s all well and good getting into the box, but the final bit to finish, that’s what makes the difference. Is there anything imminent terms of
incomings at the moment? No not absolutely imminent We’re looking, but nothing to tell you
about anything that might happen right away. Links with Cavani, something that Chelsea
would be interested in? He’s a great player, I played against him
and I always loved his mentality and attitude, and obviously his goal scoring record speaks
for itself. I’m not absolutely aware of what the situation
is, so we’ll see. He’s an experienced player, but so are many other players out there. I think we are young, and we know about the
transitions. The idea of bringing in experience is something I’m certainly not absolutely
looking away from. Because sometimes the young players need a
little bit of help, and if that’s the case then that may help us. Any movement on Olivier Giroud or Victor Moses
leaving? With Ollie there’s not much more to say than
I’ve kept saying. We know there’s discussions on the idea he
may move on, and that it needs to be right for everyone, and it isn’t yet. And on Victor Moses he’s obviously coming
back from his loan with a view to going elsewhere, and those talks are ongoing as well. What did you say to the players after on Saturday,
because they would have been deflated? Yeah, and I certainly felt for them because
it wasn’t for a lack of effort, passion or drive. We pushed for big, big parts of
the game and I won’t keep saying the same things. But when we had chances we didn’t
take them, that’s clear, and that would have won us the game, for sure. It would have
changed the dynamic when you leave a team still in the game, what can happen did happen.
We didn’t defend the cross right, we maybe should have headed it away and maybe saved
it with Kepa with the chance. So those little moments are crucial. There is no point me
being negative about that. I would be negative if I felt there was a lack of effort or something
missing, but there wasn’t. They gave everything and it just go for us on the day. Kepa, how have you assessed him this season? I will always defend all the players and if
there are individual errors then players are the first ones to put their hands up and goalkeepers
should be as well. It is an isolated and difficult job because the spotlight is on you individually.
At the times he has made good saves for us this season and at times he’ll say he wants
to do better. He is still relatively young as a goalkeeper, he wants to improve, as he
should do, be on himself. He can improve as much as all the team and we can improve. So good to play so soon afterwards or could
do with a few extra days? I’m not sure. It’s the same for Arsenal.
From our point of view, we want to get the win obviously. It will be a tough match. I’m
not sure about the space in between games, it is the same. Obviously after a defeat you
want to get a good feeling and win straight away. What have you made of Arsenal this season,
and surprised they’ve struggled? I wouldn’t say struggles, this Premier League
is proving to be so competitive. There are other teams that are in and around that were
fancied. Tottenham fancied to be in the top four, Arsenal fancied to be in the top four,
they normally do contest it and they still can do. I wouldn’t say that anything is
definite at this stage of the season. It is their problem, not mine. What I do know when
I come up against them is that they are a good team with good players who can hurt you.
You have seen a bit of a change since Arteta came in with their performances and we felt
that in the first 30 minutes of the Emirates particularly, so we must be on our guard and
at our best. Are you looking just long-term, or are you
open to short-term fixes? I think long-term in January can be very difficult,
we haven’t seen so many. We have seen some deals, but not so many that have come in.
If that’s difficult then short term is something we would look at, because they are issues
that are pressing for this season for us to finish where we want to get to. So if we have
to look short term then it’s something we would look at. Does your players have the same mental attitude
as you to get into the box and score? Everyone is different, I wouldn’t want to
care them to my mentality. I think from midfield we have had a fair share of goals. From the
wide areas, if you look at the successful teams in the last 3, 4, 5 years of the Premier
League the numbers from goals in the wide areas are pivotal from what they produce.
It changes games. Not just to put it on them, we can have competition to score goals in
all areas of the pitch. Our goal record probably doesn’t stack up terribly with others in
the Premier League, it is probably where we are controlling a lot of possession and creating
a lot of chances, that is the chance conversion that is the issue. Arteta’s impact, similar Arsenal to December? Similar, I think his effect was pretty sudden,
I felt it when we played him in small tactical changes and maybe an energy boost that can
come with a change of manager. But I think from his side he wants more time. They’re
a good team, he is a good coach and he does deserve and will get time to get it right.
Already he’s had an effect and I’m under no illusions about how tough the game will be. Kepa take responsibility? I didn’t have a direct conversation
with him after the game with that one. Goalkeepers mistakes are amplified? I’m sensitive to the fact that goalkeepers
are under the microscope and that can be tough. He’s like any player, like a striker when
it’s not going for him. The only thing to do when it’s not going your way is to keep
your head down and be humble and work. That’s what I push everybody here to do. That doesn’t
change position to position. He’s a good goalkeeper, we know that, and there have been times this
season when he’s saved us points. You look at the clean sheets and you’re happy. And
sometimes we go, ‘Is that an individual error or a team error?’ and the goalkeeper takes
the brunt because we haven’t defended right as a team. There’s lot of different circumstances.
I don’t want to dwell on it as a negative, it’s a reality, we have to be honest, there’s
a pool of us here and if it doesn’t go right we have to be better. Keep on keeping on? I like that. Is that a play or words or not.
Something like that! Rashford overplayed has caused a back issue? You can’t criticise a manager for making a
decision like that. Marcus Rashford has been in incredible form this season, scored 19
or 20 goals. He’s a huge factor in their team. Hindsight is the most beautiful thing. If
you’ve got a player there who wants to play, and every week there’s probably somebody in
your team like that, you have to make decisions. I’ve heard managers get slated when they turn
away from the FA Cup and play a second string team and now I’m hearing a manager slated
for playing one of their most important and best players in a game in the FA Cup. You
can’t have it all ways.

It's a home game. We have to win. You cannot lose two or three matches and win two matches again and go on like this.

Victor Moses could still add something to the squad. I remember him scoring a few from the wide areas.
