Bruno Fernandes transfer breakthrough as Marcus Rashford injury forces hand

January 21, 2020

Manchester United have made a breakthrough
in their attempts to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to reports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the 25-year-old
his top priority following injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay. Fernandes has been in stunning form again
this season, netting 15 goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions. United and Sporting have been deadlocked over
the midfielder with both clubs having different valuations of the player. But now Plataforma claim there has been a
breakthrough with a compromise on the horizon. Sporting have been demanding a total of £60million
(€70m), which could be £51m (€60m) up front and £8.5m (€10m) in bonuses. United were only said to be willing to offer
£42.6m (€50m) plus £8.5m (€10m) in bonuses though. The reports claim the Red Devils have got
back in touch with Sporting and showed a renewed willingness to get a deal done following the
news of Marcus Rashford’s injury. The striker could be out for around three
months with a double stress fracture of his back. Rashford’s absence has convinced Ed Woodward
and Solskjaer they must add Fernandes to their ranks before the January 31 transfer deadline. The reports now say the transfer will go through
for an initial £47m (€55m) with bonuses on top of that. United are desperate to finish in the top
four of the Premier League and ensure Champions League qualification for next season. At present, the Red Devils sit five points
behind Chelsea in fourth, after the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. After the match Solskjaer admitted his side
could look to make new additions to the squad following the injury to Rashford. He said: “We’ve had many, many injuries
to big players this season. Marcus now, Anthony’s been out for months,
Paul’s been out for more than half the season and Scott’s been out for months. “It’s just an unfortunate situation that
we’re in. “It might be, because the window is open,
we might look at some short-term deals as well that could take us through to the summer.
