Basketball Lessons for Beginners : How to Hold a Basketball when Shooting

October 31, 2019

Okay, what we’re going to talk about now is
just the basics of the shot. So chances are if you’re a beginner you’re probably younger;
if you happen to be older and you’re just now picking up the game of basketball this
might be a little bit easier for you. But as a smaller person you’re probably going
to want to use two hands. And whether you’re right or left-handed it’s going to vary. I’m
right-handed so I’m going to show you the right-handed. What we’re going to want to
do is we’re going to want to keep our hands spread at a comfortable distance, almost as
wide as we can get it, but as wide as we can get it and what’s comfortable for us. And
we’re going to place our hand on the ball like this. Now when we’re setting up for our
shot we want to use our left hand to balance it and situate that. And we’re going to want
our left hand up and on the side of the ball, holding it there and steadying it for us.
Our right hand is going to be behind, and our elbow is going to be in. You don’t want
your elbow our here like this, that’s a bad shot. You can even see it in some of the NBA
players; they have their elbows up, not a good way to shoot. So you want to use your
left hand to balance the ball, keep your right hand spread, cock your wrist back a little
bit, and keep your elbow in. You’re going to just push it. You’re going to start the
pushing motion towards the rim and it’s going to come off of your fingertips last. So you’re
pushing it and bringing your wrist forward, just like this. And it’s going to roll right
off your fingertips. And if you’re doing it properly, the ball is going to spin and rotate
backwards. So, left hand is holding the ball, the right elbow is in, the hand is somewhat
cocked back here at the wrist so that you can just use your wrist action. And then you’re
going to follow through, you’re going to point like you’re pointing at the rim.

Alot of this stuff may seem stupid and trivial but I've actually seen plenty of people who have a crap shot.

If you learn the basics and practice them diligently you can become a great shooter.

On the other hand if you have bad mechanics later on in life it's gonna be hard to break those bad habits.

I think this vid is aimed towards 8 year olds.

To learn how to shoot check out Herb Magee. Don't let the ball sit flat on your palm. It will roll around i and your shot will not be consistent.

Hey guys, plz help!! I post up, rebound, and dribble, and (shoot near basket) with my right hand…. But whevenr I do outside jump shots, i tend to use my left hand…. My left hand isn't as strong as my right, but I feel more comfortable with my left…just feels weird when i cradle the ball on my right arm to shoot jumpers… SO do u guys think I should stick with left hand or practice more with my right…? (FYI im sorta ambidextrous, write and bat with left but others things are right hand)
