For those not in the know, NXT is WWE’s
developmental system where they train and prepare the wrestlers who will lead the company
into the future. WWE Champions Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and
Kevin Owens have all come through the yellow brand, but you don’t always get to debut
on the main roster as part of a cool faction, or in a feud with John Cena. In fact, more often than not, Vince McMahon
puts you in a cape. I am Luke Owen and these are five botched
NXT Call-Ups. Bo Dallas It’s amazing to think that Bo Dallas is
a former NXT Champion. The belt that has been held by names like
Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura. Not only that, but he holds the record for
the third longest reign behind Finn Balor and Neville. Dallas was looking to get a big push on his
debut on the main roster – lasting 20 minutes in the 2013 Royal Rumble and entering into
a feud with Wade Barrett over the Intercontinental Championship. When he made his full transition to the main
roster in 2014, he went on a winning streak on TV doing his Bo-lieve gimmick, but after
returning from a four-month injury in 2015, he was treated like a jobber. He would interrupt promos from Sting and Brock
Lesnar only to get beaten up by the much bigger stars. Things looked like they were getting back
on track when he became part of The Social Outcasts, but they also quickly became a joke
act. So, in all, Bo Dallas made his main roster
debut in 2013, and it took until 2017 before he’s done anything of note. And even then it’s been dressing up like
The One Man Gang for The Miz. Tyler Breeze Prince Pretty was at the top of the NXT card
during a time when Neville, Sami Zayn and Tyson Kidd were competing for the NXT Championship
– and before that he was the FCW Champion in 2012. While he never held the gold in NXT, he was
always in main event or semi-main event level feuds, and even had a match with the legendary
Jushin Thunder Liger at the first NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. It’s a shame then that his call-up to the
main roster has been somewhat flat. Breeze made his WWE debut in October 2015
on Smackdown, and was brought out by his new valet Summer Rae. He then went into a feud with Dolph Ziggler,
and won their first match at Survivor Series. But then, for whatever reason, Tyler Breeze
went on a losing streak. His partnership with Summer Rae was quietly
dropped and he lost to Ziggler a couple more times to end that feud – and then lost virtually
every match he was a part of until May 2016. He formed Breezango with the similarly underused
Fandango after turning on his previous partner R-Truth – who remembers that tag team? – but
it wasn’t until April 2017 that the team was taken somewhat seriously thanks to their
backstage Fashion Files skits. The Ascension Here’s a fun fact for you: The Ascension
– at the time of writing – are the longest reigning NXT Tag Team Champions. Granted they held them during a time when
NXT weren’t doing regular Takeover shows, but their reign still lasted just under an
entire year beating teams like Too Cool and… well that’s about it. Their call up to the main roster is one of
the more interesting in recent times. The whole point of NXT is to develop characters,
promo styles and wrestling styles, but The Ascension were brought up to Raw and Smackdown
with a gimmick overhaul. Gone were the mysterious gothic powerhouses,
and in their place were Road Warrior knock offs complete with facepaint and shouty promos. Demoliti – I mean The Ascension – made their
main roster debut on December 29th 2014 and began feuding with The New Age Outlaws, leading
to a victorious match at the 2015 Royal Rumble. But it was all downhill from there. By May 2015, they had only won a couple of
their television matches, and lost many more. By the end of the year they had aligned themselves
with Stardust as The Cosmic Wasteland, but the team quietly disbanded in early 2016. Since then, there has been nothing of note
in their main roster careers, becoming the butt of the joke in Breezango’s Fashion
Files vignettes. American Alpha Speaking of tag teams wasted on the main roster,
how about former NXT Tag Team Champions American Alpha?! The team – made up of Chad Gable and Jason
Jordan – quickly became one of the most popular tag acts in NXT due to their amazing in-ring
work. They had great feuds with The Revival, Authors
of Pain and The Vaudevillains – including an amazing tag team championship victory at
NXT Takeover: Dallas in 2016. The pair came up to the main roster as part
of the Brand Split in late 2016 [39] and quickly got into a feud with the newly heel Usos. They won the Smackdown Live tag team championships
from Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt in December 2016, but lost them shortly thereafter to
The Usos just before WrestleMania 33 without a feud. The following week’s Superstar Shake-Up
made Gable and Jordan an afterthought. “Once the decision to move the New Day to
Smackdown was made, [American Alpha] were no longer in the top face team spot…” – Dave Meltzer, Wrestling Observer Newsletter,
July 24th 2017 And then, after being mostly absent from TV,
Jason Jordan was revealed as Kurt Angle’s illegitimate son on the July 17th 2017 episode
of Raw. Jordan moved to the red brand as a result, splitting the team up in the process. Bayley Is there really a more wasted NXT call-up
than Bayley? Of WWE’s Four Horsewomen, Bayley was the
last to be called up to the main roster, but was one of the most over babyfaces on the
entire brand. Her character went on a huge evolution in
NXT, going from a fan happy to be there to the underdog chasing the championship from
bully heels Charlotte and Sasha Banks. She eventually won the NXT Women’s Championship
at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn I in what Dave Meltzer reckons, “what may have been the best woman’s
match in WWE history.” She was beloved by the NXT crowd, and was
considered a female version of John Cena that actually connected with the audience. A huge merchandise seller with the capacity
to be a hero to young girls – a market WWE have historically struggled to get. So how could they possibly botch that? Bayley joined the WWE main roster in August
2016 and was instantly put into the title picture with Charlotte and Banks. She challenged for the Raw Women’s Championship
several times, and following an unsuccessful attempt at Royal Rumble 2017, she captured
the title on a random episode of Raw. She defended the belt through WrestleMania,
but then lost the championship at Payback in her hometown of San Jose. She then had an awful This Is Your Life segment
with Alexa Bliss and a dreadful Kendo Stick on a Pole Match at Extreme Rules. Since then, WWE’s poor booking of Bayley
turned the crowd against her – even booing her during her announcement that she was injured
and wouldn’t be able to compete at Summerslam. Maybe some of these call-ups should be cut
from the WWE Network – like these other clips! And what about Mick Foley’s botched retirement? Click the videos to the left. Press subscribe and support WrestleTalk on
Patreon. I’ve been Luke Owen, and that was a list.

Bayley was not botched, the fans turned on her lol. It is what smart marks do, tear down talent, then proclaim there were botched. Aka narcissist.

    "Turn her heel!"

Also, as I have said many times, NXT is a different audience than casual WWE. Do not be shocked if Asuka fails to capture the crowd. Just because someone was successful in NXT, does not mean they will translate to the main roster, where there you do not have to pay $9.99 per month to watch.

NXT=WWE's version of the independent circuit. Harder to access, and does not garner much attention outside of the hardcore audience or indy crowd.

  • Reply FL1PN0S1S September 4, 2017 at 6:27 am

hold on, some of these aren't botched or wasted. not all call ups are gonna have a lengthy hall of fame career. a combination of booking/creative, injuries, fan connection/appeal, etc, somewhere on their paths they'll either stay relevant, become jobbers, or even leave WWE altogether. jus because you came from NXT doesn't mean you're a lifetime main eventer or have meaningful championship runs.

all those that u mentioned, esp Bayley. i feel should have Nvr left nxt. bayley and emma are 2 that should be nxt lvl. maybe include fox and dana. sadly i dont think they will ever be "good enough" for main roster. weither its from the wrestling skills, to promo talk, etc. oddly whoelse is main roster but failing to do much, Becky. Yet for some reason Lana and (finally) tamina have something in works?
WWE needs better writers… and some skillful wrestlers dont hurt. but with better writers u can get the talent to mash up and look better then crap at least lol.

  • Reply Boost Mayne September 4, 2017 at 7:19 am

Bayley is the only one who botched her callup. She suddenly can't talk, call it nerves or whatever. Having the title at wrestlemania is a big investment from wwe and a massive opportunity, she just couldn't take the pressure. Remember that horrible segment on talking smack where Booker T had to finish her promo for her. Send her back to NXT for 6 months or something.

WWE turn everything good to shit. You give them gold and they will waste it, morph it, into dust. Look at the Hardys? They return at Mania 33, to the biggest pop in years, and were what many considered the best segment of Mania. They were the most sought after property in Western wrestling! By Summerslam? They're on the pre-show wrestling to an empty arena.

  • Reply Charles Huke September 4, 2017 at 3:48 pm

Isn't that part of the problem with NXT though? Bayley has already done a big story arc where she goes from a fan happy to be there to a legit talent chasing the belt. Then when she comes up to the main roster she's already established, they can't do the same storyline again because lots of fans have already seen it, but there are casual fans who don't know who she is. She also comes up to the roster very hot, having been at the top of the roster and having great matches with Sasha and Asuka, but then it's considered a bad thing to put the title on her quickly. It does seem hard to get the balance right here

Here is what you didn't say Mr. Wrestletalk 2. Bayley is horrible to watch. And yes it dosen't help that she is the John Cena of women's wrestling. There is a lot of talent on the women's roster, Bayley is not one of them. Her finishing move is too routine.

"Fuck the Revival" I think that quote just about sums up Vince McMahon's outlook on their run on the main roster.

Seriously? The Ascension vs The Revival ought to be an amazing feud, but ATM it stands below jobber, and somewhere an "oh god please no!" status on the main roster.

I liked The Ascension more than either the Wyatts or Shield prior to each respective teams full-time call-up to the main roster. And then came the Revival, holy crap their in-ring psychology is just about the very best I've seen since the 1980's. What a shame.

I don't believe they botched Bayley. She did it herself. She is always nervous while making a promo in front of the crowd, and can't carry weaker workers to a good match. And besides her entrance everything else about her is boring. She will never be a female John Cena. She is just awful with her promos making them look like they are fake. To be a big star in WWE superb in ring skills are NOT the most important asset. It is how the superstar connects with the crowd.

NXT fans should just rapidly support the NXT call ups on Raw and SDLive, regardless of WWE's horrid storytelling IN FACT! They should be hijacking the shows IN SPITE OF WWE's horrid storytelling! they (NXT alumni) gave us such epic moments in NXT, Sami Zayn and Shinsuke got a fight forever chant down in NXT not so long ago, we should flooding the fucking arena with "WE WANT SAMI" chants EVEN now after his piss poor Bobby Lashley's sisters feud, or singing Shinsuke's theme during his matches despite the fact that he changed his theme or chanting that he's still the KING OF STRONG STYLE! Neville? He gave us one of the most entertaining title runs in NXT, helping put NXT on the map so guys like Gargano and Cien could have their big 5 star match, we should be chanting "bring back ADRIAN Neville" the KING OF THE CRUISERWEIGHTS, he got a thank you neville chant when he interrupted a cruiserweight title match between TJ Perkins and Rich Swann, both of whom deserved better from the Raw crowd.
Hijacking Raw and SDLive in a proactive way instead of chanting for what you don't want, chant for what you do want, and to most NXT fans that should be the wrestlers who came from the indys and the NXT system and rabidly supporting them IN SPITE of what Vince is doing with them and letting HIM GET HIS WAY!

He tries to give Constable Corbin another jab at Finn Balor? Then scream at the top of your lungs that Finn was THE BEST NXT CHAMPION, that Corbin was not even good enough to hold the belt in NXT! It gives both Corbin and Finn something to work with should they have enough balls to play up to that, Corbin can be like "that was the minor leagues, this is the big leagues and I thrive here" and Finn can be reminded how much we still care and maybe he can do something besides smile, maybe find that demon lurking within him still!
Don't let Vince win and turn you against those cherished moments in NXT, chant at the top of your lungs at how much better NXT is compared Raw and SDLive, how much better Triple H can book a show compared to his father in law (extreme rules aside which I'm sure Vince already booked the outcomes too before the show got around to airing BTW) chant at the top of your goddamn neckbearded lungs that NXT is the superior show instead of playing with a stupid fucking beach ball or counting down from 10 during an iron man match like's the goddamn royal rumble! I mean how fucking hard is that?

You're letting Vince and those filthy casual wrestling fans take this product you love so much from you and letting them win!! I get tired of hearing about draw power and wrestling prowress from casual fans who know absolutely nothing about the business trying to speak to me at my elitest level like I'm a child and I'm tired of my fellow SMARKs acting like children (proving the casuals right) and trying to hide at full sail their whole fucking lives, fucking hell just hijack the show in a positive way!
JUST ONCE YOU USELESS BUNCH OF SMARKS! DO SOMETHING PROACTIVE FOR ONCE!!! or you know what fine, I haven't watched The WWE product for a long time now, I'm jumping ship to NJPW, bye suckers!

  • Reply jtjr26 January 21, 2019 at 6:11 am

I don't think Vince really has a clue on how to push the woman on the roster outside the pervy attitude era. Its no secret he likes blonds and also really beautiful women. Bayley comes from the indies and is not a model so already its outside of Vince's wheel house. Honestly I think Bayley just needs to be more assertive and aggressive. Also try to have her come across bit less less kooky and naive. They had her all primed to turn heal and bailed out at he last min to instead to do the couples therapy bit that was not great.
